SOCIOLOGY IN PRINT
Assignment Rubric
In class, we have discussed many areas of sociology as a discipline and sociological thought respectively.
Through assigned readings of your text and in-class discussion, it has been my goal that you understand
not only the relevance of the field of sociology in each of your lives, but also through application, better
understanding of contemporary social issues. Reading and engaging in dialogue of these issues enrich
development of a creative sociological imagination. For this assignment, students will locate an article of
interest (interest area relevant to topics covered in course materials/discussion prior to the due date) from
a credible news source (e.g. NY Times; Washington Post; Boston Globe; NPR, etc.) and write a response
synthesizing relevant course material. The write up should include the following parts:
1. Summary of Article
Describe the content, findings, and/or message the article is conveying to the general public. Are
any key assertions being made?
2. Analysis of Content
Analyze the content of the material presented in the article you’ve chosen. How does it relate to
one of the topical areas we’ve discussed thus far in class? Identify 2 (two) sociological concepts
that you are now familiar with as they relate to your article. Define and provide a short
explanation as to how each of the concepts can be applied to the content of the article. Is the
article congruent with your sociological perspective?
3. Critique of Content
Describe whether points made in the article are consistent, sociologically, with that of general
concepts, trends, and ideas we’ve covered in class to this point. If you were to respond to the
author of your article, are there any comments or variables you might suggest as a way to make
the article more sociologically informed?
4. Pose a Question
Write one question you have after reading the article. Why is this question sociologically
significant? Describe how this question might be useful for sociologists in the field studying the
topic of your article.
Note: By “sociological significance,” we refer to the various social processes involved in understanding
the topic at hand as both a private trouble and a public issue, or the intersection thereof. In other words,
what variables are at play in determining or affecting, the social phenomena/social reality (e.g.
medicalization) you are addressing in your question(s)? You might ask yourself, “How does my
sociological understanding of the topic at hand differ from a layperson point of view?”
Guidelines
– Use Times New Roman, Font Size 12.

2
– Include a web link to the article at the end of the paper for the instructor.
– If citing the Ritzer text, include (Ritzer 2016) as a citation at the end of the respective sentence.
