Students should track themes from each book and analyze how gender as a form of power/oppression and girlhood as a location is always working with relation to sexuality, race, class, nationality, ability and other identity markers. These identities are further impacted by girl’s movement through and interaction with various institutions (schools, families, church, public space) and structures (policies, laws, etc.) in everyday life. Students will create their own writing prompt to review and analyze each book read in the course and think through the major themes presented in each book. To write an excellent review, students must use examples from the book to explain and give depth to their thesis.
The book deals with many themes that many young people struggle with, especially femme identified youth. In particular as you read think about the following:
How patriarchy stills or stifles girls, femmes and women’s voices
How girls and femmes bodies are viewed in public/by others
How religion may shape how girls and femmes know themselves
What safe spaces exist for young people to explore who they want to be
What identities do the author and main character share?
