Description and Context
The progress report is the second of three interconnected assignments that comprise the last unit of our semester in TCOM 3302:
1. A research proposal (where you propose the problem or opportunity you want to research for your recommendation report)
2. A progress report (where you update me on your progress on your research and writing)
3. A recommendation report (where you make a recommendation about the problem/issue/challenge to stakeholders)
The purpose of a progress report is to describe the status of an ongoing project (Markel & Selber, 2018, p. 454). You’ll use the progress report to inform me about the work you have completed and the work you still need to complete for the Recommendation Report.
The progress report should be 1-2 single-spaced pages, not including the references section. All references must be in APA format. The progress report is worth 150 points.
Genre
For the progress report, you have a choice of two formats: a business letter or a memo. The sample progress report in Chapter 17 of Technical Communication uses memo format; it is a good reference for both formatting and content.
Pages 454-456 discuss how to compose the content and project an appropriate tone for your progress report. Read those pages carefully.

Purpose
Articulate an explicit statement of purpose for the progress report that also indicates the topic of the project and recommendation report.

 Articulate a brief statement of the context for the project
 Explain the background of the problem or opportunity you are addressing in your recommendation report
Results of Research
Organize the “Results of Research” section in chronological order as you discuss completed work and future work:
 Completed Work
o Task 1
o Task 2
 Future Work
o Task 3
o Task 4
Updated Schedule
Here, be sure to identify all tasks associated with preparing your recommendation report and indicate the status of each task (completed, in progress, not yet begun).
Conclusion
 Summarize the status of project
 Offer to provide additional information
References
 List the references discussed in your progress report in APA format
 Start the “References” section directly after the “Conclusion” section or present it on a new page
Requirements
The requirements for the recommendation report include:
 Length: The body of the report should be 1- to 2-single-spaced pages
 Includes purpose, introduction, results of research, updated schedule, conclusion, and references
 Includes a discussion of at least 2 new sources (sources you did not discuss in the proposal)
 Uses APA format
The body of the report can go over two pages without penalty.
Evaluation
This assignment is worth 250 points total. I will evaluate your work using the following categories:
 Purpose: The progress report has a clear purpose and includes all required sections.
 Audience: The progress report is appropriate for its audience, the instructor (Dr. Petts).
 Organization: The progress report is organized logically.

The Superior Paper (A, 90-100%)
 Purpose: Addresses all the criteria outlined in the assignment description in a rhetorically sophisticated manner
 Audience
o Clear identification of document’s audience
o Author is cognizant of his/her audience during the construction of a document and makes informed decisions about the features of a document based upon his/her conceptualization of audience
 Organization:
o Document is purposely and logically organized to cater to audience needs and considerations
o All paragraphs include a strong topic sentence and transitions
o Each paragraph has a clear focus
 Mechanics: Sentence structure, grammar, and diction excellent; correct use of punctuation and citation style; minimal to no spelling errors; no run-on sentences or comma splices.
The Good Paper (B, 80-89%)
 Purpose: Addresses all the criteria outlined in the assignment description in a rhetorically sophisticated manner
 Audience
o Clear identification of document’s audience
o Author is cognizant of his/her audience during the construction of a document and makes informed decisions about the features of a document based upon his/her conceptualization of audience
 Organization
o Document is purposely and logically organized to cater to audience needs and considerations
o All paragraphs include a strong topic sentence and transitions
o Each paragraph has a clear focus
 Mechanics: Sentence structure, grammar, and diction strong despite occasional lapses; punctuation and citation style often used correctly. Some (minor) spelling errors; may have one run-on sentence or comma splice.
The Borderline Paper (C, 70-79)
 Purpose: Author does not address all the criteria set forth in assignment description
 Audience: Little evidence of how the author is aware of his/her audience which may or may not include contradictions made throughout a document
 Organization
o Overall organization of the document is not effective
o Paragraphs do not include a strong topic sentence

o Paragraphs do not include transitional sentences
o Paragraphs are unfocused
 Mechanics: Problems in sentence structure, grammar, and diction (usually not major). Errors in punctuation, citation style, and spelling. May have several run-on sentences or comma splices.
The “Needs Help” Paper (D, 60-69)
 Purpose: Difficult to identify the document’s purpose
 Audience: Author fails to consider who his/her audience during textual production
 Organization
o Overall organization of document proves to be ineffective
o Paragraphs do not include a strong topic sentence
o Paragraphs do not include transitional sentences
o Paragraphs are unfocused
 Mechanics: Problems in sentence structure, grammar, and diction. Frequent errors in citation style, punctuation, and spelling. May have many run-on sentences and comma splices.
The Failing Paper (F, below 60)
Shows obviously minimal lack of effort or comprehension of the assignment. Very difficult to understand owing to major problems with mechanics, structure, and analysis.
