The four questions are from both Introduction to Sociology 2e and The Sociologically Examined Life. Here are the questions:
1. Symbolic interactionism is a micro-level approach to sociology. It sees face-to-face interactions as the building blocks of larger social institutions. Describe how individuals interacting with each other produce larger social institutions. Pick an example and describe how specific social acts can, when repeated by many people, produce large-scale social structures.
2. Compare and contrast C. Wright Mills’ “Sociological Imagination” and Michael Schwalbe’s “Sociological Mindfulness.” How are these concepts similar? How are these ideas different? Apply these terms to a social reality, and be sure to highlight the distinctions between the two concepts.
3. Explain how several agents of socialization have shaped your life experiences, beliefs, routines, goals, expectations, and worldview.
4. Which theory do you think better explains how societies operate—structural-functionalism or conflict theory? Why? Use a specific social institution and/or social issue to illustrate your answer/argument. ***Be sure to outline the basic premise of each theory***
***YOU MUST FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING OUTLINE MODEL FOR EACH QUESTION***
Use the “SEE” model:
S- State: Clearly state the concept/term
E- Elaborate: Describe the concept in your own words
E- Exemplify: Demonstrate your understanding with an original example
Each question should suffice a minimum word count of 250 words
The use of outside sources as references that support your claims, answers, and examples is REQUIRED.
