This assignment requires that you write a Reaction Paper of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, which consists of three main parts: the introduction; your reaction (or the body of the paper); and the conclusion. Please follow these guidelines to write your Reaction Paper:
WRITING THE REACTION PAPER
Write the name of the author, book and year of publication. Your introduction will include a concise summary of the book. What are Douglass’ main ideas and points and what content supports them? Be factual and objective in your summary.
Write a thesis statement that identifies your overall reaction to the book. The thesis will guide the reader through the remainder of your paper.
Provide at least three points that explain your reaction to the book. Your reactions should consistently reflect what you have written in your thesis statement. Each reaction should be a paragraph. You may react to one or many points raised by Douglass. What issues does Douglass discuss in his book that drew your attention the most? Support your reactions with quotations and specific evidence from the book and note your information with in-text citations (page number).
It is appropriate to use “I” to explain your reaction. For example, “I felt that…”; I did not get the connection between…”
Write a concluding paragraph that summarizes your reaction. You may also want to give an example of how Douglass’ book relates to current issues and/or your own perceptions or experiences. Is The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass a book that you would recommend to others?
