The purpose of this assignment is to engage in a close reading and analysis of one of the week’s assigned readings. A reading response is due via cuLearn at the beginning of the class in which that particular reading is assigned (for instance, a reading response written on an essay assigned July 5 must be submitted to cuLearn by 6:05 pm July 5 – not July 17). Reading response papers should comprise 2 to 3 double spaced pages and will include:
Identifying the thesis statement, in either your own phrasing or through direct citation
Synthesis of what the author(s) argue; this will include referencing and citating the reading to prove the arguments you synthesize
Articulating one original counter-argument, which will include not only challenging an element of the reading (whether considering method deployed, argument(s) developed, theory posed, or conclusions articulated by the author(s)), but also include explaining how your counter-argument challenges the author(s)’s findings.
A conclusion that outlines what this reading contributes, overall, to your understanding of children, youth, and media
Each paper will be graded out of ten marks, half of which pertains to formal characteristics (including: grammar, spelling, organization, and adherence to assignment format) and half of which pertains to the substance of writing (including clarity and persuasiveness of writing; originality of analysis; and degree of detail and support offered by the student).
