The Situation: We all have moments in our lives when we realize something new or surprising about the world. Based on those experiences, our viewpoints on how various ethical, societal, and political issues are developed.
For this assignment, think of a situation where an event in your life has led you to believe strongly that certain policies need to 1) remain the same, 2) be modified to varying degrees, or 3) be completely changed. Consider issues outside the English Discipline. Issues such as medical practices, technological innovations, childcare needs, educational policies, mental and physical health concerns, etc. are some possible broad areas that can be explored. You do not need to be an expert on the topic, but you should have some experience with the topic you choose for Major Paper #2. Also, by reflecting on a past situation and drawing a clear conclusion, your paper should have an arguable thesis (NOTE: this paper must be driven by an arguable thesis).
Be sure to provide appropriate sources that convince the reader that the arguments you present go beyond your personal experience and are reasonable.
Remember, this paper is not meant to be a personal narrative but rather an argument driven by logic.
The Assignment:
1) Be sure to title your work
2) Your paper should follow MLA format and have a Works Cited page
3) Use at least three different written sources (a reputable Internet source will count toward this number). Online sources that once saw print count as written sources.
4) Must contain a counter-argument and refute

Sample Outline:
Women in the Military
Thesis:  With proper training and understanding, women, like men, should be afforded the opportunity to choose their job in the military without limitations.

  1. Introduction
  2. Positions and training in the military are limited to women because of restrictions put on them due to gender.
  3. Women are not allowed in combat situations.
  4. When training, women are basically given an “easy” button.  They are not even given the opportunity to perform as well as men.
  5. Personal Experience
  6. I was not required to perform as well as the men physically in basic training.
  7. As an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist in the U.S. Air Force my superiors did not expect me to perform as well as the men in the same position, nor did they give me the opportunity to do so.
  8. Main point #1: Women should be trained physically the same as men and not by using a double standard.
  9. Women are not required to do as many sit-ups or push ups as the men.  They are required to run the same distance but have more time to do so.
  10. Army researchers came up with a new study that concludes that, when a women is correctly trained, she can be as tough as any man. (cited, RAND study)
  11. Main point #2: Women should have the right to choose the job they want and not be told they cannot do a specific job.
  12. As long as women are briefed on and completely understand the nature of the job they want to do, they should have that choice.
  13. If a women is given the same opportunity to succeed and she does, there is no reason why she should not be awarded the opportunity to do so.
  14. Main point #3: Studies show that integrating women into previous “male only” positions has had a relatively small effect on the readiness, cohesion and morale of the unit.
  15. The presence of women has been noted to raise the level of professional standards. (cited)
  16. Military units of mixed sexes have quietly maintained order, accomplished missions, and passed operational readiness inspections with flying colors. (cited)
  17. Counter Argument: Some people may feel that women do not belong in combat positions because men will feel that need to protect them.
  18. Men will see these women as their mothers, wives, sisters or daughters.
  19. Men won’t feel comfortable putting women in harm’s way.
  20. Refute: It is not that the women can’t do the job, it is about the reaction men have toward the women doing that job.
  21. Women are being punished for the way others think.
  22. If everyone is trained from the beginning that they are all equal no matter what their gender, this would not be a problem.
  23. If a man saves another man’s life he is a hero, but if he saves a women’s life he is going soft.
  24. This is a double standard. Women are soldiers, just like men.
  25. Conclusion: Women should be given the same opportunity to prove themselves as men do.
  26. Women should be given the same equal training as men.
  27. Not all women want to play the part of Suzie Homemaker. Some have the same desires as men to fight for freedom, no matter what the cost.
  28. Military service is about selfless service to the country.
  29. Women should not be denied this right.
  30. Being a soldier has no gender.
