PREVIEW – Literacy Research Project (LRP)
Project Scenario: We have been asked to do research on the various literacy programs available to schools and report back to the administration via short presentations. Based on our findings, they will be better able to recommend a program to the School Board. In order to address this task, I am going to divide the work among each of you.
If it helps in your planning, here is a link to the other pieces of the project:
LRP: Research #1

Assignments
1. Choose a Literacy Program
Your first step is to find a literacy program that you want to evaluate. This website includes programs that have already been evaluated and found to be somewhat or very effective (thus narrowed the list).
Read the online article Literacy Programs: Choose Wisely and Be PickyLinks to an external site. by Courtneay Kelly, Ed.D.
Then scroll down on the same page and take a look at the resources under the heading Literacy Programs Evaluation. There are 3 resources: What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), Best Evidence Encyclopedia, & Evidence for ESSA. You can open these resources to locate reviews of literacy programs. WWC and Evidence for ESSA will probably be your most helpful. In the WWC, make sure you are looking at a program evaluation versus just a classroom practice. Read the descriptions carefully.
From the programs listed in those resources, choose a program to share with the class.
(Click on the program, and it should open in a separate tab.)
2. Choose a grade
In order to keep the focus of your final project manageable, I want you to choose a specific grade level. So, what are you most interested in?
Kindergarten – 12th
3. Choose a content area
In order to keep the focus of your final project manageable, I want you to choose a specific content area. So, what are you most interested in? Not sure, the California Department of Education has a list of Curriculum & Instruction Subject AreasLinks to an external site. that you can pick from. Academic content areas include subjects like math, science, language arts, social studies/history, etc.
Resources – Articles
The following articles provide more information on evaluating literacy programs. You are expected to read and write a summary for each of these articles. They are provided here in order to help you better understand what you will be doing for the final project. Feel free to use these as source material (include them in your references) in your final project (remember to cite).
Read and write a summary for both.
You will upload your summaries as part of this assignment.

You do not have to complete an annotated bibliography this week since everyone is reading the same articles. You will ONLY upload into Turnitin this week. *Only ONE document will upload, so make sure both summaries are saved as one file. Each should be 150-200 words and include a correct APA citation.
Assignment Instructions:
