In my opinion, the field instructor managed the situation appropriately and I would have proceeded with the same actions. It is critical to separate personal values and professional values. According to Poulin, Matis, and Witt (2023), social workers should use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism in practice situations. Being involved with clients is not about our personal values or interest, but is for the best interest of the client. Implementing lessons about the human behavior and the social environment, person-in-environment, and attachment theory to better understand Marys behavior highlighted why Janet should be more empathetic rather than judgmental.
I would manage my feelings of being disrespected from a cognitive standpoint point by viewing their behavior as a response to their challenges, frustration, and reality rather than a personal attack. I would manage my feelings of disrespect from a behavioral standpoint by setting boundaries. In this specific case, I would have stepped away from Mary for a few minutes. I would then return and let Mary know that her behavior and language is inappropriate and is not helping the situation. I would manage my feelings of disrespect from an emotional standpoint by prioritizing self care. Burnout is very common in the social work field. I currently take mental health days and spend majority of my day at the spa. This allows me to be mentally strong and able to handle emotionally challenging situations at work. By addressing my feelings from a cognitive, behavioral, and emotional standpoint, I can maintain professionalism and separate my personal values and professional values.
