What does it mean to be a “caring society” according to Slaughter and to Hochschild? How and why should politicians work together to help Americans become “citizens who care” (Slaughter 246). How can we work together to achieve this goal?
Slaughter is looking for new public policies that would create “a country that values work and family equally and enables its citizens to live full and happy lives” (232). But what happens when these citizens struggle to find a balance within a “competing urgency system” (Hochschild 189). How can we achieve the kinds of policy changes Slaughter is calling for while living in a world where “social logic” calls for citizens to apply “the principle of efficiency” to their personal lives (Hochschild 184)? Discuss how an “infrastructure of care,” as described by Slaughter would help the workers at Amerco? Why is it so difficult for America to institute “government or workplace policies” that support caring for children, elderly parents, and sick relatives? What are the benefits to the “Care Grid” (Slaughter 233)? What does it mean to be a “caring society” according to Slaughter and to Hochschild? How and why should politicians work together to help Americans become “citizens who care” (Slaughter 246). How can we work together to achieve this goal?
