Part One: Focus on the design component of mise-en-scene, consider the matter of design as they pertain to either or both of the two films, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or The Night of the Hunter — but feel free to make connections or comparisons to a film or two that you know, one where you can see the importance of design — sets, costumes/makeup, props, and so on — how the design contributes to an important theme of the film, or says something about characters, or narrative.
Part Two: One of the elements of design listed in the textbook focuses on what the actors wear: costume, makeup, hairstyle, etc. Choose a film youve seen recently which demonstrates the way costume, makeup, and/or hairstyle contributes to a films meaning or its expression of its major themes. (Monahan/Barsam provide numerous examples, with perhaps the most obvious being Edward Scissorhands.) Discuss the films use of what the actors wear to convey meaning.
