Part 1 (250 words):
Drawing on the readings by Andreesen, Salhman, and Technology Ventures, what made Yahoo such an attractive opportunity (and not just a good idea) in 1995?
Identify the major risks in each of these categories at the time of the case:
Technology
Market
Team
Financial
What is the most critical category for the founders to address in the short run? Why?
Part 2 (250 words) (UNRELATED to the yahoo case above):
How would you implement customer discovery and validation?
Brainstorm how you would set up experiments to validate if the idea you have is in fact a need that a customer has.
Once validated, how would you validate if the implementation of your product actually succeeded? What you want to probe here is the essence of hypothesis-driven thinking.
You would set up criteria here for what success would be, how to set up experiments against those, and then test. Again, you would do this within a rapid time frame so you are iterating quickly towards victory.
What you are evaluating is not whether or not you succeeded or failed, but how much you learned. This is the key learning of lean and a shift from thinking about success as a binary outcome, to an unlimited outcome where you can succeed if you ‘failed’ and learned a lot. You’re setting up that framework in the your mind as the key central focus for lean startup methods.
