You should begin with two paragraphs: the first should explain the general importance of this task and the second should explain its significance to John Jay students either in English 235 or generally, depending upon your choice of topic. Then, prepare a step-by-step set of directions that leads your reader through the task.
Step 1: Choose a task or skill that you must fulfill for this English 235 course or a difficult administrative procedure required by the college; prepare a set of written directions for it. (Do not offer directions on how to write argumentative essays or how to do MLA or APA documentation as we do not do those types of writing or processes in this course.) Prepare two paragraphs that introduce the subject of your instructions and then another that explains the importance of this assignment or process for your reader.
Step 2: Write a step-by-step account of how you complete this task. Assume your audience has never done this task before, and predict what problems they might encounter. Compose a thorough description that can act as a script for the extra credit assignment. the How-to Video.
Step 3: Include visual aids that will help cue your reader on how to complete the task. These visual aids should support and complement your textual explanations. For example, if you wanted to explain how to apply for graduation, you could gather screen captures of the website that would guide your viewer through the online process. Or, if you explained how to develop a resume, you could show illustrations (with sidebar explanations) of how to construct this type of document. (Google how to do “screen captures” on your type of computer so that you know how to do that techno-task.)
