You will write short (250+ words) reactions to at least twelve of the seventeen reading assignments.
Suggestions for writing meaningful reaction papers:
Do not summarize the texts or films. Instead, react and respond to something you find interesting, surprising, shocking, enraging, or hopeful. Personally connect to it.
Or challenge the author’s argument. Do so by providing evidence and argument from material we have covered in class.
Or use the history to reflect on or understand something in the present.
Or make connections between the new reading and something we read previously.
If you find yourself writing, “I found XYZ interesting or shocking…,” use that as an immediate warning to go deeper, saying how learning this thing changed your perspective on history, America, yourself, or whatever.
Employ the terminology and concepts we learned in class or prior readings.
Revise and proofread.
Double-check that you’ve included all the required formatting, citations, and information.
You will be graded based on:
your responsiveness to the material (show you have read the material)
your use of it (show some analytical thinking – why is something significant? How does it relate to other material? What themes emerge?)
your effort to explain your ideas (use examples from the text)
Clarity of your answer
Papers are due on Learn before class on the day the reading is assigned. Because the assignment is tied to class discussion, and because class is part of where you will receive feedback on your writing (through lecture and class discussion), you must be in class to receive credit.
You will use Chicago-style author and page/section citations for all information you get from the reading.
Regardless of the above, you will receive a score of zero and a report to Office of Student Conduct if your paper contains plagiarism or other academic dishonesty.
