Your essay should explore how one aspect of Rock’s novel is (1) transformed (2)

Your essay should explore how one aspect of Rock’s novel is (1) transformed (2) slightly altered (3) enhanced by visual medium (4) or omitted entirely in Granik’s film. Your claim, or thesis statement, should suggest the larger impact this choice in adaptation has in comparison with that of the novel. How does this change the themes or meaning of the narrative? How does it enhance or complicate the meaning of the novel? What effect do the changes have on the audience experience?
You should support your thesis statement through textual evidence from both the film and the novel and interpret the significance of each piece of textual evidence (much like we did in class) as it relates to your argument.
The essay should also include commentary on how the themes or ideas you explore relate to the world beyond the text(s) and may apply to human experience in general.
Please note that you may NOT write your paper about the difference in Caroline’s/Tom’s perspective in the novel/film, as it has been exhausted in class.
Be careful in discussing the film and novel, respectively, to use the appropriate director/author name in reference to the text(s) and to not confuse the character names of Tom and Caroline.

Avoid “I think” or “I believe” statements. This essay is not the place for opinion or review. We are not interested in whether you think the novel or film is “good” or “bad,” but rather in how you see meaning being constructed in the texts.
Do not summarize the plot! Your essay should only reference the text in support of your argument, not summarize the contents of the film or novel.
