Revise: Writing Sample
I would like for you to evaluate each step of your writing process. Each step is covered in the book, but I have entered sample questions below if you do not have the book. You do not have to answer every sub-question; simply evaluate and comment on how you worked each step of the writing process. Enter your answers below the revised paragraph.
1. What prewriting techniques did you use to plan the essay? Are you happy with the techniques you used, or will you try different ones next time? Did the ones you used allow you to start the planning process early?
2. Are you happy with your drafting step (the actual writing of the essay), or will you change how you approach this?
3. How did you employ the revision step of the writing process? This could mean adding details, moving paragraphs, narrowing or broadening the thesis or paragraph topics, etc.
4. How did you employ the editing step of the writing process? Did you use AI only, or do this yourself, or use the FSCJ writing lab?
Citation Note: Always add a note after your paragraph, or somewhere in the writing that you used (whatever AI) for editing or idea creation, etc. “ChatGPT used for editing.” “Bard used for outline generation.” Remember, it is acceptable to use AI to edit in academic settings and in my classes, but you must always as the class professor if this is allowed.
Professor’s Note: I view the revisions as the most important part of the class. Your writing will substantially improve if you take the time to understand and learn from my comments on the initial drafts. Try to learn one to two grammar errors each revision.
Write: Definition Paragraph
Read the sections on the stand-alone paragraph and definition. For this assignment, you have two options.
1. Option 1: Write an original paragraph with no outside information. You don’t need to look up information to see what your room means to you or what you feel a Democrat is, or whatever you want to define. Just write the paragraph and submit. That’s it. Include an honor pledge after the paragraph.
2. Option 2: Choose what you want to define; Then, enter a prompt in an AI app or website: “Write a paragraph defining what a hero is.” You may choose any term to define- father, patriotism, republican, Christian, car, sister, parent- any term at all.
3. Next, copy and paste the document and label it as the AI generated paragraph; then below the AI document write a new paragraph or revise the AI paragraph to fit your definition of the term. For example, you might add some personal examples, you might disagree with the AI definition, or write a completely new paragraph.
4. If you revised by including direct quotations, paraphrase or summary of the AI paragraph, please cite properly. This means you always cite in two places, in the body of the paragraph and include the full link below the paragraph.
To cite in the body of the paragraph, you may use an acknowledgment phrase before or directly after the borrowed information such as, “According to ChatGPT, a hero is “someone who sacrifices for the greater good.”
Or you may use a parenthetical citation after the borrowed information by entering all or part of the prompt in parenthesis. “A hero is someone who sacrifices for the greater good (“Definition of a hero”).”
Then add the full citation link after the paragraph, which might look like this.
Definition of a hero prompt. ChatGPT, GPT-4, OpenAI, 30 Jun. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat.
