It can be overwhelming to determine which words to teach, when to teach them, and how much time to invest in teaching them and ensuring that students know and understand them. This assignment focuses on supporting you with this challenging step of designing and implementing effective vocabulary instruction. Please review the resources on this topic, reflect on your current practice for this part of your instructional process, and identify any TWO ideas/suggestions you read about that confirm what you are doing and you will continue to use this approach and/or a new approach that you are considering using or one that you have already decided to use. You can include any combination in your post: two that confirm, two that are new, or one of each.

Please review the resources and watch the two videos that show examples of explicit vocabulary instruction. The three steps that are demonstrated in both videos include the following:
Introduce the word
Non-linguistic representation
Students generalize meaning
*Design and share your own activity or lesson plan that utilizes this three-step approach to teach new vocabulary. Remember the importance of selecting academic, content specific, or diverse terms that will provide students with a strong vocabulary foundation; purposefully choose words that students will be able to recognize and use repeatedly over the course of their learning.
*Include opportunities for challenge and modifications for support to be able to differentiate instruction appropriately.
*Identify the grade level, content area (if applicable), and the unit of study when you would teach them.

*If you currently have a word wall in your classroom or if this is an idea that you would now consider utilizing, please explain how it works or would work for you and your students.
*Think about word selection, teacher responsibilities and student responsibilities for maintaining it, the organization of the words on the wall, the use of visual representations or only the word, the length of time the word remains (all year or a specific length of time), how it would be used to promote student use of the vocabulary terms, and how you would hold students accountable for the words that appear on it.
*For those of you who are striving to create a culturally responsive and aware classroom, in what ways can you use a word wall to teach tolerance and acceptance, and recognize diversity?
