ay close attention to the writer’s style, i.e., not just what’s said but how it’s said. Look for moments in the passage that seem to reveal a subtext at odds with the obvious level of the text. Tally your observations, i.e., draw inferences, work toward a thesis. You may comment on other relevant portions of the story but focus in on your chosen passage. Write two and a half to three pages, typed, double spaced (800-1000 words). Title the essay (the title of the story is fine). You do not need to quote the entire passage, but please indicate its parameters and quote from it. Don’t plagiarize. I’ve read all the relevant commentary. If you want to reference someone else’s comment, be sure to cite it by providing his or her name. High Similarity and AI scores will be investigated. Beware of Grammarly: it smooths everything out in a weird, upbeat fashion (and will likely push your AI score into the 40% range).
