In the work of Paulo Freire, we learn about the benefits of problem-posing education and what it means to be a critical educator in the world. Just like we hope to engage our students in problem-posing methods of education, as life-long learners we must also engage in problem-posing education ourselves as well.
Consider what problems you see in education today. As teachers, how might we face these problems and find strategies for building schools for a just society? What systems are currently in place that need to be revised?
What systems are currently working that we should build on?
Choose one issue that you feel is important to focus on in education today and consider ways that we could make our schools more welcoming, accepting, accessible, equitable spaces for all students, staff and faculty.
Some examples of issues you might explore include: bullying intervention and prevention, institutionalized racism, gender inequality, equitable facilities on school campuses, equitable access to educational resources, support systems for struggling students, irrelevant or outdated curricula, etc. We will brainstorm a longer list of issues you
might explore for this project later in the semester, but as we discuss topics, throughout the semester, be mindful of which you might want to revisit for this project. For this project, you will:
1. Choose an issue in education to focus on
2. Research the problem
3. Make recommendations for solutions
You may choose to identify schools that are already doing work to solve such problems and learn from what they are doing in order to inform your recommendations. For this activist project, you will write a 3-4-page paper
Your paper should include:
1. A description of the problem and an analvsis of how it is impacting schools today
2. Reasons why this is a problem that needs attention
3. The options that should be considered for solving this issue
4. Your recommendations for steps that need to be taken to solve this problem
5. How others can take part in this activist movement you are proposing
