Lab 5: Chi-Square

Lab Analysis #5 Discussion Board – 10 Points

About: Is there a relationship between sex (male vs female) and being afraid to walk alone at night? In this discussion board, you will examine the results of a chi-square between sex (male vs females) and fear of walking alone at night.

Our goal is to see if there is a difference between males and females and whether they report being afraid to walk alone at night in their neighborhoods. We will not only be applying what we learned this week but also engaging in discussion with our classmates about what could be the reasons behind the results that we see.

Results:

These results come from a national survey called the General Social Survey taken in 2022. Among the many questions, respondents were asked to identify their sex as well as wether or not they were afraid to walk alone at night. Make sure to read both the cross-tabulation table and the chi-square and p-value output. Here are the results!

Directions:

For your original post in paragraph format write a minimum of 200 words and provide answers and statements to the following prompts:

  • (Make sure to answer the questions in paragraph format)
  • Identify the pattern you see in the cross-tabulation table, which group had the highest percentage of saying they were afraid to walk alone at night?
  • Interpret and explain the statsitical output for the chi-square, do we have significance? Is there a relationship between sex (males vs females) and being afraid to walk alone at night?
  • Consider the relationship between the two variables, what could be some of the reasons behind the results? What additional variables can be considered in determining the relationship between these two variables?
