Directions in week 2
Rhetorical Analysis Response
Purpose: Meaningfully engage with the text to examine not just what the author(s) convey(s) but rather to focus on how the author(s) craft their argument and analyze the effectiveness of the text.
Logistics: Each rhetorical analysis response should follow MLA guidelines (see page 601+ for a sample paper) and should be about 500 words (about two pages) in length.
Questions to Consider:
What is the author’s point? Is there a secondary point? What is that?
By what means does the author support the point? What type of evidence does the author provide? How is the support effective or ineffective in justifying the point? Make sure to identify ethos, pathos, and logos as well as any other rhetorical appeals.
What assumptions does the author make about the audience? Why does this matter?
How does the organization help or hurt the point the author is working to make?
What action (if any) does the author want the reader to take after reading the text?
What is the moment of kairos that makes this argument particularly important now?
What counter-points do you find in the text? How does the author discredit those?
Expectations for the Submission:
Well-organized, thesis-driven (Your thesis will likely provide a brief synopsis of the text’s content along with your determination of whether the text is effective or not: make sure to emphasize your writing revolving around the effectiveness) response with an introduction, body paragraph(s), and a conclusion.
When appropriate, you should include cited evidence from the original text to bolster your claims. Make sure that you include both in-text and works cited entries to avoid plagiarism.
Your response should be revised and edited to reflect college-level work.
