Read the excerpt from American essayist and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson (attached below.) This is an excerpt from his famous essay “Self-Reliance.” After reading, write a response essay using the SOS organizational pattern described in chapter six. (See page 75 in the Kuehner text for a detailed guide concerning how to write this essay. I have also made some notes for how to approach this assignment below.)
Suggested method:
Summary — Summarize the work briefly, focusing on the main ideas only. (1 paragraph, stick to the main points.)
Opinion / Support — Respond to the main ideas in Emerson’s essay with your own personal opinions and support for those opinions. Your support does NOT need to be outside sources. I am actually recommending that you not use outside sources for this one, as it’s more of a personal response. Thus, you do not need “expert opinion” support; you only need good, solid reasoning. This section should be the longest section of the paper. (2-4 paragraphs.)
