Students will write a paper exploring their own racial-ethnic, spiritual-cultural roots. Address the following questions:
How have racial-cultural influences, including ethnicity, race, religion, social class, and gender, influenced the development of your values and beliefs?
Could you explain to me which of your identities allows you to experience privilege? Which identities expose you to oppression? How do you feel about these experiences? (Singh & Chun, 2010)
How do your values create challenges as a therapist working with clients with different cultural identities?
How do you navigate these challenges?
Incorporate concepts derived from the assigned readings into your discussion to demonstrate an understanding of the material and how it may be applied to analyzing your personal experiences. Conclude with strategies or action steps for a culturally reflexive practice.
The original paper should be written in APA 7 style, and references properly cited. Must include at least four references.
(Approximately 8-10 pages; stay within ten pages).
I am a white 61-year-old mother of 2 grown daughters and have been married for 35 years to my husband. I live in a small town in Indiana. I have been an educator for 39 years, teaching high school art. I am catholic but do not always agree with everything the catholic faith pushes. I love to garden, volunteer, work in my community, and create art. I went back for my MS in art therapy at 60 years old. I wanted to pursue a lifelong dream of helping people. I am simple. I love to be with family and friends. Being in education has opened my eyes to racial-cultural influences, including ethnicity, race, religion, social class, and gender, which influence the development of values and beliefs of so many of my students.
