The Democratic and Republican parties have long competed against each other in national elections, vying for the opportunity to implement numerous desired public policies. At the same time, the strength of political parties at the state levels differs greatly from the national level. Likewise, political parties’ strength within states varies relative to each other, often drastically, from state to state.
After reading about the existing major and third parties, please write a 6-8 page paper that addresses the following matters about California state political parties: (1) measures like the Ranney Index that compare its level of competition with other states (2) which political party is currently in control (3) the history of competition for presidential, congressional, and statewide races within the state and (4) prospects for future competition in these races. Lastly, do you believe that the level of party competition is adequate for the states’ citizens? Why or why not?
Importantly, your paper needs to be constructed as an argument. The best papers will not merely cite statistics that demonstrate the degree of competition in a state’s elections. Instead, they will take a position as to how much competition exists in California, and they will cite statistics to back up their assertions.
Please use standard 1” margins with 12-point font. You may (but are not required to) consult outside sources. Your paper must include in-text citations along with a works cited page for ALL cited sources.
