“Through observing the patient experience and learning through others, nurses develop theories relative to their experiences.  To develop a theory comes from observations simply seen in daily clinical practice. This may seem not possible, given how busy nurses are. Middle-range theories are useful because they take concepts and test real-world scenarios in clinical settings rather than grand theories (Chinn et al., 2022). Middle-range theories can show how nursing observations are connected. Middle-range theories identify problems for patients with the appropriate interventions and outcomes. The more concrete the concept, the better testing that can be put into the hypothesis (Chinn et al., 2022).

Theory development can involve nurses reflecting on their experiences and engaging in research (Chinn et al., 2022). Through the observations during patient care, there would be uncertainties that may create questions appropriate for improving outcomes.  Nurses can collaborate with colleagues in research, do literature reviews, and create projects centered on quality. Middle-range theories are imperative for bringing all the observations and data with current knowledges (Chinn et al., 2022). Nursing theory can improve by combining knowledge with observations in clinical practice (Chinn et al., 2022).

There is importance of keeping updated with current education and new literature to stay current in practice. Involvement in peer discussion about complicated topics or passing feedback, completing regular continuing education, and utilizing evidence-based practice is how I will stay current in my practice as a APRN. Nurses utilize evidence to make them aware of patterns in patient care.  Theory, evidence-based research, and application to practice while provide the support to make nursing care and patient outcomes stronger (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023).
