write a paper of 1,000 words (MIN 900 words, MAX 1000 words) explaining some differences between the two recordings. Be specific, detailed, and use technical terms including meter, mode (major/minor), texture, musical device, and instrumentation wherever possible. You are not required to use external sources, but anything you quote from another author must be acknowledged with appropriate and accurate citations.
You will have to listen to the recordings a few times to get to know them properly and compare them closely.
First think of the similarities that are consistent through the recordings – these might be meter, mode, musical device, and texture. Take stock of these similarities and mention them.
Then listen to the differences. While listening, use the following questions to guide your notes on the differences between the recordings:
Answer ALL the questions! (when you discuss each question, you must include timeframes)
What types of instruments/voices can you hear? Do they differ between the two recordings? Do the timbres differ between the recordings? (Tip: search online for the names of the performers to find out who they are, what they specialize in, and about the instruments they play or their voices.)
For each moment you compare use timings to indicate when and what you are talking about. Also include specific terminology where appropriate like: meter, mode (major or minor), musical device and texture (i.e. are there moments you hear a bass framework or ostinato, when are they and are they in major or minor; are there moments where you hear homophony and other where you hear polyphony? where/when are they? etc…)
Are the two recordings at the same pitch? Is one higher/lower than the other? (Tip: listen to the first couple of seconds of each recording to compare them.)
Are the two recordings different speeds? Which is faster/slower? If there is a difference in speed, what effect does this have on the overall feel?
Are there differences in the dynamics, articulations, and/or rhythms?
Are there any substantial differences in the music they play? Does one of the recordings add an introduction, or other additional sections? (Tip: if you are comfortable reading music, search online for a copy of the music and follow it while listening to the two performances.)
Does one recording add more ornaments to the melody lines than the other? Can you tell what the performers are adding?
What is the overall difference in mood or effect between the recordings? What of the above elements contribute to this?
Which of the recordings did you prefer, and why?
Do not take up space with composer biography, performer biographies, or general background information (3 points). Be focused and discuss the recordings in detail. While discussing the recordings in your paper, refer to the two different recordings as “Recording 1” and “Recording 2” to save space.
1)Including in text citations and long quotations are not allowed
2)If you use the outside sources, you must include the work cited page. ( 5 points )
3)Since we will be using the recording, you must include the time frames. Always be specific! ( 5points )
*At least a minimum of 7 different timeframes must be included for full credits
*A set of timeframes is counted as ONE (“From 2:32 – 2:45 ”, the musical texture changes…. “)
*0:00 will not be counted
*For instance, In the Recording 1 of Option 2 from 1:30 – 2:04… or the ornamentation played by the violin at 3:04…
4)Your unnecessary info does not count toward a minimum 900 -word requirement ( 3 points )
At the beginning of your work, ONLY include your name & the title
Do NOT include class info, instructor’s name, submission date
5)Do not write your entire paper in a very long paragraph ( 5 points )
6)Follow the academic writing structure ( do not list the answers)

Choose one composition and write an essay (minimum two double-spaced pages) that addresses the following questions:
What style does the piece represent (e.g., Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, Expressionistic, Neo-Classical, etc.)
What musical elements of the piece help to identify its style?

What musical texture(s) do you hear?
Does the piece change texture?
What dynamics do you hear?
Are there changes in the dynamics? If so, are these changes sudden or gradual?
What is the tempo?
Are there changes in the tempo? If so, are these changes sudden or gradual?
If you choose a vocal piece, does the music support the song’s text? If so, in what ways? (Be specific – give examples.)
Your musical selection should not be one that is discussed in depth in the reading material. You are free to choose something that is not covered at all in the reading material, provided that it represents one of the musical genres covered in this course. Music-101

Things to discuss:
What pieces were on the programs? Who wrote them?
Who was/were the performer(s)?
Discuss the works you heard. Talk about what interested you about the pieces. Are they representative of the eras in which they were written?
Discuss the performance itself. Was it good or bad?
Point out specific instruments or groups of instruments (or instrument families) the composers highlighted; why do you think he or she made those decisions?
On a larger scale: what sort of emotional or dramatic journey did the composer take you on? Was he or she successful?
Summarize the concert: what was your favorite part? Why did you like it? etc.

Attend a live professional concert of music related to the class and approved by your instructor. Your required concert should be a professional one by organizations such as the Dallas Symphony, Irving Symphony or other groups listed on our eCAMPUS Musical Organizations links page. Sorry, but a concert of “pop” music will not count for this assignment. (Contact your instructor for approval of substitute concerts not listed on our course links page).
Dallas Symphony Orchestra Web Page: Low-priced Stand-by tickets are available at the box office for almost every concert. To purchase a stand-by ticket, arrive at least one half hour before start time and purchase the ticket at the lower-level boxoffice. The Required Report/Review
Write a 400-600 word report and e-mail it to me using the link provided under the assignments tab. The report should detail your impression of the music performed, the performing organization, and your reaction to the overall experience. Do not copy information directly from the program notes…use your own words. Send in your report as soon after the event as possible while your impressions are fresh in mind.
100 points total possible
Your paper should include the information listed below with your name, class title, day, time, and section number identified at the top.
Name the performing organization, date of the concert, and the name of the conductor. Mention composer and title of the compositions you heard performed.
Tell about the composers: Name, dates, style, and a few historic facts about each one.
Say something descriptive about each composition on the program. Go into detail describing at least one or two of them: Describe anything special about the quality of melody, rhythm, and accompaniment or background.
Include a description of the instrumentation.
Were there outstanding soloists in any of the compositions?
Include observations on volume, tempo and texture.
How do the elements change to create different moods? What emotion was communicated by the music?
What did you think of the conductor?
End your review with a description of what you enjoyed the most about the experience? The least? Was the audience enthusiastic about the performance or just luke-warm? Did you feel you were dressed correctly to “fit in” with the audience? How did this performance differ from a popular music concert?
Hints on How To Get Started Writing a Concert Review/Report.
Describe the sound of the music you heard using musical terminology studied in class. Was it a Symphony? Tone poem? The program will give you an introduction to the music.
Think of broad opposites to start such as: was there a great deal of contrast from loud to soft? From high to low? Large groups of instruments to small? Was there an outstanding soloist? Did the ensemble play music by any composer’s we have studied in the online class?
Go from the general to the specific. Focus on a few things that interested you and go into detail. Did the performers seem to be “into the music”? (Believe it or not, professional musicians can get bored playing the same repertoire year-after-year). Was the audiences response to the performance enthusiastic or lukewarm? Were people friendly?
Teacher’s Advice
Don’t use words you read in the program notes, I want to hear your own impressions in your own language. There are no points deducted because you aren’t a professional journalist. The points you are awarded on this assignment depend on how well you write about your experience without copying material written by anyone else.

MUL2010 VIRTUAL CONCERT REPORT GUIDELINES & RUBRIC
Points Possible
1.
Section/Paragraph One: Note the virtual concert you chose to view for this assignment. Be sure to include the following:
· Performer’s or ensemble’s name, date, and location
· Performance Medium (such as piano recital, orchestral concert, opera, symphony concert, etc.)
5
2.
Section/Paragraph Two: Make a table with three columns listing all pieces in the order they were played (include any encores as well).
Column 1: Composition Title
Column 2: Composer’s full name followed by birth and death year in parenthesis. The composer is not always the performer. The composer writes the music; the performer is who is executing it.
Column 3: Composition Style (musical era). This should correspond to the dates when the compositions were written and the musical era during which the composer lived.
For this class, the style periods are as follows:
Medieval (450-1450)
Renaissance (1450-1600)
Baroque (1600-1750)
Classical (1750-1820)
Romantic (1820-1900)
Contemporary (1900-present day)
Example of Paragraph Two Column:
Composition Title
Composer (birth year – death year)
Composition Style (Musical Era)
The Erlking
Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Romantic
Symphony No. 40
W. A. Mozart (1756-1791)
Classical
Rhapsody in Blue
George Gershwin (1898-1937)
Contemporary
Continue until you have listed all compositions performed in the concert being viewed.
45
3.
Section/Paragraph Three: Write a description of each individual song or instrumental piece performed.
If you view a concert with 20 songs being sung, list all 20 and describe each, including the performer(s).
If you view an orchestral concert with a symphony containing four movements as one of the works, describe each movement of the symphony, etc.
A few descriptive qualities to analyze include:
the melody of the piece–how would you describe it? Is it a memorable tune, repetitive, disjunct and erratic, soaring, lyrical? Be specific.
the rhythm–is it consistent and strict, is it syncopated, etc.?
the character and overall musical style of the piece (is it a vocal/instrumental solo, part of a larger orchestral work, etc.?)
the emotion or mood of the piece
the tempo and dynamic level (is it fast, slow, moderate in tempo; Is it a monumentally loud piece or several dynamic changes from loud to soft? Elaborate!)
length of the piece (is it a solo piece, multi-movement, excerpt from an opera?)
For full credit, writing should be clear and eloquent, with no significant errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Be sure to organize this section with an efficient and appropriate listing of music performed (in other words, do not group 20 song descriptions into one large paragraph).
50
4.
Section/Paragraph Four: Describe the concert environment. Include the following:
A description of the physical layout of the performance hall or venue. Be sure to include the audience seating or standing in relation to the performers.
The clothing of the performers. Describe what people are wearing. If the men and women have slightly different clothing, note that information.
The clothing and behavior of the audience members (if visible in the video). Was this a casual outdoor concert on lawn, a grand amphitheater, etc.? Be descriptive.
15
5. Section/Paragraph Five: Write a paragraph describing your general reaction to the concert. Be sure to include:
Insight about your own experience going to concerts and whether you enjoyed your selected concert.
Would you have liked to have been a member of the audience instead of being a “virtual” viewer?
Was the concert what you expected?
What was your reaction to the music performed?
