should begin with an idea. Perhaps something that struck you as you were reading. What questions were raised for you as you read, or by class discussion? Alternatively, you can try using the Suggestions for Writing questions at the end of each chapter to guide and frame your essay. Focus on an area that involves one of the fiction elements we have been talking about in class (e.g., plot, setting, point of view, character, symbolism/imagery, etc.). What interests you in how any of these elements relates to a particular story? The way a character acts or changes, the narrator and the perspective/impact he/she brings to the story, the importance of a particular scene or setting, etc. Make observations or notes first and see if that helps bring your idea into formation.
Your idea does not necessarily have to be profound, obscure or difficult. It may seem obvious, or simplistic once you have thought of it. But the goal of this paper is to explain your idea to the reader and show them why it is so obvious. Address your paper to an audience who knows the story, but not your idea. DO NOT spend time merely summarizing the plot of the story – you will receive less than a C on this paper if you do so.
Introduce your idea at the very beginning of your paper, and then organize the rest of your paper around this idea. Support your idea with evidence, analysis, thoughts and some quotes from the story. Your paper should contain three elements: 1) your idea; 2) the evidence that supports your idea (observations and details of the story); 3) the thinking (analysis) that connects the idea to the evidence. You can use research for this paper, though it is not required. If you DO use outside sources, you must cite them using MLA format. If you quote from the story using our textbook, indicate the paragraph number the quote is from in parentheses following the quote. When using the title of a short story, it should be in quotation marks. Format: Typed, double-spaced, 1- inch margin, 12 point font (Times New Roman)
